The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and Lewes Public Library present GLASSLAND as April’s film for the Around the World series. GLASSLAND, an Irish drama, will screen at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, April 6th at Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza (behind the Lewes Wawa). The Around the World film series presents critically acclaimed, international independent films. Doors open at 6:30 pm.
John (Jack Reynor) lives with his mother, Jean (Toni Collette), in a subsidized housing complex in Dublin eking out a meager living as a taxi driver. He returns home one morning to find his mother unconscious from an alcohol overdose, and it was not the first time. Jean is offered an opportunity to participate in an expensive recovery program but the family has no savings or insurance. John feels forced to offer his services to a petty criminal to help pay for his mother's medical expenses. He soon is faced with a life-changing task that may alter him and his family's lives forever. GLASSLAND received a Best Narrative Feature Award at Galway Film Festival. It also won Jack Reynor a Special Jury Acting Award at Sundance Film Festival and Toni Colette a Best International Actress prize at the Irish Film and Television Awards. Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com said, “This intimate Irish drama travels a road that'll be familiar to anyone who's ever seen a film about addiction, or known an addict, but the fact that all stories of addiction are essentially the same doesn't blunt its impact.” Rex Reed of the “The New York Observer” said, “Bring plenty of Kleenex. A nickel pack won’t do.” [2014, Ireland, Runtime: 93 minutes, Not Rated]
