The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present WIENER DOG a dark comedy written and directed by Todd Solondz.
WIENER-DOG is a hilariously biting comedy that follows the wayward adventures of a dachshund who passes from oddball owner to oddball owner. Using the dog's arrival and departure as the film's structure, Solondz strings together four vignettes about how each owner’s radically dysfunctional life is impacted by 17the pooch.
The first story introduces Delpy and Tracy Letts as the parents of a little boy named Remi (Keaton Nigel Cooke) who has just emerged from an almost deadly battle with childhood leukemia. In the second Greta Gerwig plays Dawn Wiener, a character from the coming of age film “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” now grown up and a veterinary technician who sets off on a road trip after rescuing the dog from euthanasia. The third involves a screenwriting film professor (Danny DeVito) whose career is stalled. Ellen Burstyn rounds out the fourth story as a terminally ill artist who is losing her eyesight.
Each of the mini-narratives plays out in a mode familiar to critic for the Solondz fans. Filmgoers predisposed to enjoy his brand of black comedy will not be disappointed. In the “Philadelphia Inquirer” critic Tirdad Derakhshani says, “Viewers ……..will be pleasantly surprised by the deeply felt humanism in WIENER-DOG. Death may be a prevalent theme, but the film is deeply life-affirming.” [2016, USA, Runtime: 90 min., English, Rated R]
