The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present WEINER, a documentary that won the Grand Jury prize at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
After resigning from Congress in 2011 because of a sexting pictures disgrace, Anthony Weiner decides to return to politics in 2013 by running for the Mayor of New York City. The documentary WEINER follows what was hoped could be a comeback story of a politician’s revival. At first it appears Anthony has been forgiven for his mistakes as reflected in polls placing him at or near the top of a crowded field. But it is not long before history repeats itself with Weiner and his aides scrambling to contain the damage of new sexting allegations.
Documentarians Elyse Steinberg and Josh Kriegman have unfettered access to the candidate and his campaign. The filmmakers capture a jaw-dropping, behind-the-scenes look at the political machine as it breaks down.
This film is a fascinating portrait of a politician — a man who, it seems, doesn’t feel that he exists unless someone’s looking at him. Some call this a rollicking riveting insider’s view of a political campaign in crisis mode. Eric Kohn of INDIEWIRE says, “MESMERIZING. The best documentary about a political campaign ever made.” [2016, USA, Runtime: 96 min., English, Rated R]
HILARIOUS. One of the best documentaries ever made about a political scandal.
— David Ehrlich, Rolling Stone
