The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation are proud to present The Metropolitan Opera’s live broadcast of Strauss’s grandest opera, DER ROSENKAVALIER on Saturday, May 13, 12:30 PM at Cape Henlopen High School Theater. PLEASE NOTE THE EARLY START TIME.
DER ROSENKAVALIER (The Knight of the Rose), is a rich and romantic masterpiece. The tangled plot of comedy, drama, and nostalgic fantasy depicts the elegant life of the aristocracy of that time. In his new production, Robert Carsen places the action at the end of the Habsburg Empire, underscoring the opera’s subtext of class and conflict against a rich backdrop of gilt and red damask.
Set in an idealized Vienna of the past, Strauss’s most popular opera concerns a wise woman of the world who is involved with a much younger lover but ultimately forced to accept the laws of time, giving him up to a pretty young heiress. Hofmannsthal’s fascinating libretto deftly combines comedy, dreamy nostalgic fantasy, genuine human drama, and light but striking touches of philosophy and social commentary. Strauss’s magnificent score, likewise, works on several levels, combining the refinement of Mozart with the epic grandeur of Wagner.
Renée Fleming sings one of her signature roles as the Marschallin, an aging beauty mournful about the passage of time. Elīna Garanča sings Octavian, the impulsive young title character. The cast also includes Günther Groissböck as Baron Ochs, Erin Morley as Sophie, Marcus Brück in his Met debut as Faninal, and Matthew Polenzani as the Italian Singer. Sebastian Weigle conducts the sparklingly perfect score. There are two intermissions. [2017, Sung in German with subtitles, Runtime: 4 hours 12 minutes]
