The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation are proud to present The Metropolitan Opera’s live broadcast of Bizet’s LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES (THE PEARL FISHERS) on Saturday, January 16 at 12:55 PM at Cape Henlopen High School Theater.
The Met Opera Live in HD season begins the New Year with Bizet’s gorgeous opera of lust and longing, LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES. Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leïla, the beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. Her suitors are tenor Matthew Polenzani and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, who sing the lilting duet AU FOND DU TEMPLE SAINT, which opera fans know and adore. Director Penny Woolcock explores the timeless themes of love, betrayal, and vengeance in a production that transforms the stage of the Met into an opulent undersea world. Conductor Gianandrea Noseda brings his romantic flair to the lush score. [2016, Sung in French with English subtitles, Runtime: 2 hours 29 minutes]
Lunch from Hobos Restaurant will be available in the atrium of the High School starting at noon and continuing through intermission. Approximate end time is 3:30 pm.
In addition to the opera performance, the HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or various production crew members while showing behind-the-scene workings. This stunning production is the fifth in The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series of 10 dates of live simulcast transmissions for 2015–16.
