Event Description

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation are proud to present The Metropolitan Opera’s live broadcast of Giuseppe Verdi’s stirring opera, NABUCCO on Saturday, January 7, 12:55 PM at Cape Henlopen High School Theater.

The Live in HD season continues as famed Met Music Director James Levine conducts Verdi’s rousing drama of ancient Babylon, NABUCCO, with the legendary Plácido Domingo adding a new role to his repertory as the title character.  Liudmyla Monastyrska sings the tour-de-force role of Abigaille, the warrior woman determined to rule empires, and Jamie Barton as the heroic Fenena. Russell Thomas sings Ismaele, and Dmitry Belosselskiy shines as the thunderous voice of the oppressed Hebrew people. There will be one intermission. [2017, Sung in Italian with English subtitles, Runtime: 2 hours 44 minutes]

The success of Verdi’s third opera, a stirring drama about the fall of ancient Jerusalem at the hands of Nebuchadnezzar (Nabucco), catapulted the 28-year-old composer to international fame.  The music and Verdi himself were subsumed into a surge of patriotic fervor culminating in the foundation of the modern nation of Italy.  Specifically, the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves (“Va, pensiero”), in which the Israelites express their longing for their homeland, came to stand for the country’s aspirations for unity and that exciting era in Italian history, the Risorgimento, or “Resurgence.”

In addition to the opera performance, the HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or various production crew members while showing behind-the-scene workings. This spectacular production is the fourth in The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series of 10 dates of live simulcast transmissions for 2016–17.

Admission for The Met: Live in HD broadcasts is $25 for adults, $22 for RBFS members, Met members, and Seniors (65+); $15 for Students (with ID), and children (12 and under). Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Online reservations may be made with MasterCard or VISA until noon on Friday, January 6. Admission will be offered at the door with cash payment only.
