Event Description

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society announces the 5th play in the exciting series of National Theatre Live screenings. National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking project that broadcast the best of British theater live from the London stage to cinemas across the UK and around the world. The RBFS will present these broadcasts on film at a later date than the original transmission.

Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge, “Coriolanus,” features an Evening Standard Award-winning performance from Tom Hiddleston (“The Avengers”, “War Horse” (film), BBC's “The Hollow Crown”) in the title role. The play is directed by the Donmar's Artistic Director Josie Rourke. The talented cast includes Jacqueline Boatswain, Peter De Jersey, Alfred Enoch, Deborah Findlay, Hadley Fraser, Mark Gatiss, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, Elliot Levey, Rochenda Sandall, Helen Schlesinger, Mark Stanley and Dwane Walcott.

When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on its hero and defender, Coriolanus, who also has enemies surrounding him at home. Famine threatens the city, the citizens’ hunger swells to an appetite for change, and upon returning from the field, Coriolanus must confront the march of realpolitik and the voice of an angry people.

This is an exciting and intense production with Hiddleston delivering a powerhouse performance in the lead role. He is compelling and persuasive, with a mixture of charisma and emotional truth in his performance that is very special. This theatrical triumph is also due to an ideal ensemble cast. The tension builds, fills the theater and never diminishes throughout an all-consuming evening. “Variety” says, “A scorching Tom Hiddleston leads Josie Rourke’s tense, revelatory staging…a theatrical triumph” and “Daily Telegraph” proclaims “An exciting and intense production.”

(Runtime: 3 hr., including an intermission).

Screenings will be on Monday, July 18th at 1:00 pm and Wednesday, July 20nd at 7:00 pm at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza (behind the Lewes Wawa). Admission for National Theatre Live is $18 for RBFS members and $20 general admission. Online reservations (www.rehobothfilm.com) are encouraged and may be made with MasterCard or VISA.
