The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Rehoboth Beach Public Library invite film and/or literary enthusiasts to a screening of “Stagecoach” on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at 4:00 pm at the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC Rehoboth), 19369 Plantation Road, Rehoboth. Based on the short story, “The Stage to Lordsburg” by Ernest Haycox, “Stagecoach” has been lauded as one of the best westerns ever made and was the winner of two Academy Awards® in 1939.
Starring John Wayne in his breakthrough role as The Ringo Kid, “Stagecoach” follows a motley group of strangers as they travel west through dangerous Apache territory. Filled with spectacular scenery and detailed character sketches, John Ford’s “Stagecoach” is said to have revolutionized the western as we know it today. In 1995 it was selected by the United States Library of Congress for preservation in their National Film Registry and Orson Wells claimed to have watched it more than 40 times. In his 2003 review, Roger Ebert said, “John Ford has swept aside ten years of artifice and talkie compromise and has made a motion picture that sings a song of camera.” [1939, USA, Runtime: 96 minutes, Not Rated]
This screening is part of the monthly “Read a Movie” series in which members read a little-known short story in advance of the screening, then gather to share their thoughts about how well—or not so well—the story was expanded to the big screen
The popular “Read a Movie” series takes place on the second Wednesday of each month (Sept – May). To sign up, and receive the stories in advance, email Denise Hoban at firstname.lastname@example.org. Admission is $4 for Rehoboth Beach Film Society members (current membership card must be presented), and $6 for future members. Tickets will be sold at the door on a first-come, first-served basis.
