The Rehoboth Beach Film Society, the Rehoboth Beach Public Library, and the Lewes Public Library invite film and/or literary enthusiasts to a screening of SWEPT FROM THE SEA, 3:00 pm on Wednesday, February 10 at Metropolitan Community Church of Rehoboth (MCC Rehoboth), 19369 Plantation Road, Rehoboth Beach. Based on the short story “Amy Foster” by Joseph Conrad, this historical drama is set in 19th century rural England.
SWEPT FROM THE SEA is a mesmerizing film about star crossed lovers, Yanko Gooral (Vincent Perez) and Amy Foster (Rachel Weisz). Yankoo is a passionate Ukrainian shipwreck survivor and Amy is a young servant girl with a scandalous heritage. In spite of random cruelties inflicted on the pair by the local villagers, Yanko and Amy become entwined in a passionate love affair, marry and have a child. When outside forces conspire against them they cling even more faithfully to each other declaring their undying devotion. The film also headlines Ian McKellen and Kathy Bates and received rave reviews for its spectacular cinematography of the Cornish coastline. Elinor Cackett of “The Silver Petticoat Review” says, “At its core this is a story about the resilience of the human heart. Summing up, this film will appeal to anyone who has ever felt different and been made to feel that difference. It has a well-acted and beautiful love story, a well-developed cast of side characters and a wonderful soundtrack.” [1997, USA, Runtime: 115 minutes, Rated PG-13]
This screening is part of the monthly “Read a Movie” series in which members read a little-known short story in advance of the screening, then gather to share their thoughts about how well—or not so well—the story was expanded to the big screen. The popular “Read a Movie” series takes place on the second Wednesday of each month (Sept – May). To sign up, and receive the stories in advance, email Denise Hoban at email@example.com. Admission is $3 for Rehoboth Beach Film Society members (current membership card must be presented), and $5 for future members. Tickets will be sold at the door on a first-come, first-served basis.
