The Rehoboth Beach Film Society, the Rehoboth Beach Public Library, and the Lewes Public Library invite film and/or literary enthusiasts to a screening of THE SELFISH GIANT on Wednesday, April 13, 4:00 pm at Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza (behind the Lewes Wawa). Based on the 1888 children’s fable of the same name by Oscar Wilde, THE SELFISH GIANT is a British drama set against the backdrop of post-industrial northern England.
An official selection of the Cannes Film Festival in 2013, THE SELFISH GIANT is a gripping story about 13-year-old best friends Arbor and Swifty. During a forced absence from school, the boys begin working for a dubious scrap dealer selling discarded wire to scrap yards. Their hard works pays off in the beginning but as Arbor becomes increasingly greedy, tensions build leading to a tragic event that transforms them all. Winner of the AFLC 2014 “British Film of the Year” award and the” Best British Newcomer” award for both young co-stars THE SELFISH GIANT WON 12 film festival awards. Lee Zachariah of “Concrete Playground” said, “THE SELFISH GIANT is one of the best films of the year: captivating, often funny, and filled with the most naturalistic performances you're likely to see.” [2013, UK, Runtime: 91 minutes, Not Rated]
This screening is part of the monthly “Read a Movie” series in which members read a little-known short story in advance of the screening, then gather to share their thoughts about how well—or not so well—the story was expanded to the big screen. On the evening of the screening attendees can receive 15% off Dos Locos’ regular priced dinner entrees.
