The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Rehoboth Beach Public Library invite film and literary enthusiasts to a screening of “The Box,” on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 beginning at 4:00 pm in the upstairs community room at the Rehoboth Beach Public Library. "The Box" is Director Richard Kelly’s cinematic adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1970 short story, “Button, Button.”

This screening is part of the monthly “Read a Movie” series in which audience members are invited to read a short story in advance of the screening, and then gather to watch the film version and engage in lively discussion about how the film compares to its original inspiration.

What if someone gave you a box containing a button that, if pushed, would bring you a million dollars? The only catch is: Someone you don’t know – somewhere – will die. Would you do it? This sci-fi mystery thriller is set in the year 1976. Norma Lewis (Cameron Diaz) and her husband, Arthur (James Marsden) are, by all accounts, an average couple living a normal life in the suburbs with their young son. But one afternoon a strange and mysterious man (Frank Langella) with a horribly disfigured face appears on their doorstep and delivers a box with a message stating that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million dollars with the press of a button. However, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another person unknown to them in the process. Dealing with the agonizing temptation of this proposition, Norma and Arthur discover that the ramifications of this decision are beyond their control and far beyond their own fortune and fate. Manohla Dargis of the New York Times writes that “The Box” is, “sincere and sinister and inevitably ambitious.” [2009, US, Runtime: 116 min, Rated: PG-13]

The popular “Read a Movie” series meets on the second Wednesday, September – May, at the Rehoboth Beach Public Library. After the film is screened, viewers will share thoughts about how the translation of the story fared when expanded to the big screen. The “Read a Movie” series is open to the public and is free. To receive the stories in advance, email Jamie Rousak, at or call the Rehoboth Beach Public Library at (302) 227-8044.

The mission of the Rehoboth Beach Film Society is to promote the art of film and, through outreach initiatives, to entertain, educate, and enrich the cultural life of local and extended communities. The Film Society sponsors monthly screenings, special events, and the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival (to be held November 5-9, 2014). The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is funded, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
