THE USE OF VARYING CREATINE REGIMENS ON SPRINT CYCLING

Here is an interesting and surprisingly well done study from the UK on our good friend Creatine Monohydrate. This study has some obvious inadequacies most likely due to dollar cost restriction not preconception or bad science.

Rough outline…….28 experienced sprinters were administered 40, 100 or 135 grams of CM in 5g doses over 4 days. The athletes were then tested in a systematic way to identify changes in repetitive performance. The 100 gram test group (25g/day over 4 days) showed…

Whey Protein

Whey Protein is a mixture of globular proteins isolated from whey, the liquid material created as a by-product of cheese production. Some preclinical studies in rodents have suggested that whey protein may possess anti-inflammatory or anti-cancer properties; however, human data is lacking. The effects of whey protein on human health are of great interest and are currently being investigated as a way of reducing disease risk, as well as a possible supplementary treatment for…

Glucose

Glucose; (C6H12O6, also known as D-glucose, dextrose) is a simple sugar (monosaccharide) and an important carbohydrate in biology. Cells use it as a source of energy and a metabolic intermediate. Glucose is one of the main products of photosynthesis and starts cellular respiration.

Time For A Re-Set

The true foundation of any training session (workout) is established with the “set.” The training session is nothing but a construct of multiple sets, yet seldom does one deconstruct the workout in to its individual components (sets) when reviewing its effectiveness. So often I’ve read or witnessed a person regaling the wonders of a given workout or training session. “Wednesday’s workout was awesome or “I was so strong on Friday” are the kinds of things I hear daily. When is the last time…

Fructose

Fructose

Fructose (also levulose or laevulose) is a simple sugar (monosaccharide) found in many foods and is one of the three important dietary monosaccharides along with glucose and galactose. Honey, tree fruits, berries, melons, and some root vegetables, such as beets, sweet potatoes, parsnips, and onions, contain fructose, usually in combination with glucose in the form of sucrose. Fructose is also derived from the digestion of granulated table sugar (sucrose), a disaccharide consisting… Continue

Glycemic Index

Glycemic Index

The glycemic index or GI is a measure of the effects of carbohydrates (laden foods) on blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates (laden foods) that break down quickly during digestion and release glucose rapidly into the bloodstream have by definition a high GI; carbohydrates (laden foods) that break down more slowly have by definition a low GI.

The concept was developed by Dr. David J. Jenkins and colleagues in 1980–1981 at the University of Toronto. The purpose of their… Continue

Growth hormone and testosterone elevation not necessary for hypertrophy & strength

A study has recently been published in a major journal, which indicates that (transient) exercise-induced changes in growth hormone and testosterone are neither is necessary or sufficient to increase size and strength. What this means, is that the testosterone/GH elevation you get from a workout probably isn’t “the thing” that boosts your size and strength.

This doesn’t mean that “test and GH don’t work” or “they don’t do anything,” but rather that the…
