Lewes Bike to Work Day

May 16th, 2014 - 8:30 am to 9:00 am
Celebrating National Bike Month, Jim Ford will make his final bike to work ride as Lewes mayor on Bike to Work Day, May 16.

With spring in the air, Lewes Mayor Jim Ford, a long-time supporter of cycling and physical fitness in general, will make his last public outing on Friday, May 16 when he leads local cyclists and anyone on a bike to his office at City Hall on East Third Street.  At the April meeting of City Council, Ford made an official proclamation announcing that May is National Bike Month. Following the mission of the League of American Bicyclists, a national organization of bicyclists, May 12-16 is Bike to Work Week and Friday, May 16 is National Bike to Work Day.

In his proclamation Ford cited that “Lewes residents and visitors are among millions of Americans who engage in bicycling as an environmentally sound mode of transportation and an excellent form of fitness and healthy activity for quality family recreation.”

His proclamation also recognized the efforts of the Lewes Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee which is organizing the mayor’s bike to work ride and the fact that Lewes has been recognized by the League of American Bicyclists by earning a Bronze Level award as a Bicycle Friendly Community.

Mayor Ford invites everyone to join him as he bikes to work beginning at 8:30 Friday morning May 16 from his home at 910 Savannah Road.

Bike to Work Day riders are asked to arrive at the Mayor’s house around 8:15 a.m. Helmets are mandatory and the ride will follow an easy flat route through town to City Hall on Third Street. Every rider will receive a commemorative T-shirt that recognizes Bike to Work Day in Delaware.

Mike Tyler, chairman of the Lewes Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee said, “Biking to work is an efficient and fun way to get the exercise you need without having to find a parking space for your car. Also it gives you extra time to exercise.  And this year, with continually rising gas prices, biking to work makes more sense than ever.” For more information contact Tyler at 645-7572.
