Celebrate American Jazz from 1930s – 1950s era. Tap your feet, clap your hands, and swing to the rhythms of American jazz classics, personally selected by John Nammack, Jazz Historian and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Instructor Emeritus.
See the film “The Girls in the Band,” the untold stories of female jazz and all-women big bands that went toe-to-toe with the finest jazz musicians of their day. In the thirties and forties, hundreds of women musicians toured the country in glamorous all-girl bands, while others played side by side with their male counterparts. Yet by the mid-fifties female jazz musicians had literally disappeared from the workplace; their names and their contributions to music completely forgotten. “The Girls in the Band” tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 30s to the present day. These incredibly talented women endured sexism, racism and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. Today, there is a new breed of gifted young women taking their rightful place in the world of jazz, which can no longer deny their talents. Chock full of great music, dancing, and performance clips, the film celebrates such bands as The Ada Leonard Orchestra, Ina Ray Hutton and Her Melodears, The Diva Jazz Orchestra, and The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, in a visual and aural feast for the senses. The seamless blending of multiple stories and characters, a treasure trove of archival material, and insightful, witty cotemporary interviews gives the film a musicality its subjects would be proud of.
